Valerie Jaudon emerg in the Pattern and Decoration mental action of the 1970s with square paintings based in succession interlocking or overlapping horizontal, vertical, diagonal and circular grids. Laid without with protractor precision, the paintings recalled basket make or Islamic patterning. Over the years, Jaudon gradually mov to a dominant vertical or horizontal orientation, discarding the grid for asymmetrical patterns derived from Romanesque and Gothic arches.
In her chiefly recent paintings, the arches and other forms have been reduc to black fragments of arcs aligned vertically, like Japanese calligraphy. The mete "calligraphy" may be misleading, however, since these figures are flat and machinelike in their precision, revealing no sign of the artist's hand. The arcs and arabesques are laid on the outside in mirror-image, bilaterally symmetrical arrangements against a background of variegated vertical stripes ranging from almost black to the palest gray. The stripes vary in width and are not laid without symmetrically.
The efficiency achieved resembles strings of figures dangling before a billowing, undulating curtain. The irregularity of the background stripes enlivens the figures in van of them. I say "in front" nevertheless in each picture a handful of these vertical stripes step quickly over the figures, locking them into their background.
Since the vertical stripes are painted in thinned-out medium and the arc fragments are flat, these paintings are at chiefly a few millimeters thick. They are sealed with a varnish that counterfeits polyurethane. Variations in the glos or matteness of a surface, coupl with the variations in the background, are the closest the paintings procure to spontaneity. These works are sandwiches of a sort: variegated top and bottom layers with absolute hinder in between. The figures dance with studied grace, if it be not that this is a stately quadrille in the court of the day-star King, and one gets the definite feeling that any attempts at jitter-bugging will be ruthlessly dealt with.
