In Krzysztof Wodiczko's first of recent origin York solo in four years, the artist readyed an ongoing project that explores the position of immigrants in Western society. Wodiczko believes that the immigrant by the agency of necessity displays a high flat of artistry in survival and a vision that furnishs an alternative to the ideology of his or her chosen society. The immigrant is the "other"--the stranger whose worldview and lived experience challenge our opennes to difference, and thus Western democratic values. Wodiczko asserts that a in plain english democratic society would welcome the unfamiliar voice of the immigrant. He descrys a parallel between the immigrant and the artist in the West; his circulating project aims to fuse the sum of two units engaging individual aliens in a performance art work titled "Xenology: Immigrant Instruments." Xenology (from the in the manner of greece xenos, strange), he says, is "the art and science of the stranger . . the immigrant's art of survival."

The exhibition center forward two multimedia sculptures, Alien Staff and Mouthpiece (Porte-Parole), and the documentation of their use in public performances. In this throw volunteer immigrants in Paris, Warsaw, Marseilles, Rotterdam, Barcelona, Helsinki and modern York walk through public spaces and engage passersby in artistic and political dialogues.

Alien Staff imitates a biblical shepherd's crook with a small video monitor and speakers at head height. In the material part of each elegantly crafted unplastic or stainless-steel staff, a clear cylinder displays the personal events of the carrier, such as immigration documents, fresh card, old photographs and household solutions The staff thus functions as a reliquary for the residue of a sometimes painful immigration proces The offer carries the staff through places like as shopping malls, where passersby may judge that it is the latest Sony issue Only when viewers draw conclude to the small monitor do they realize that the video's talking head is that of the carrier, with whom they are now face to face. What happens nearest depends on both parties. The video and photographic documentation existinged at Lelong suggested that Alien Staff sometimes interprets a dialogue in which the immigrant describes his or her experience in a less-than-hospitable cultivation On the gallery walls, Wodiczko, himself a Polish immigrant, go uped extensive texts from the frequently moving video interviews of the participants as shown onward the various Alien Staff monitors.

Mouthpiece is still in the initial phase of evolution The prototype monitor encircles the jaw and chaps of the operator, playing a prerecorded and edited articulate utterance The device literally acts as a mouthpiece by way of replacing the operator's actual dialect with a moving image of the lips and the hale of the voice. Wodiczko waiting under the possibility of fulfilments to enable the wearer to activate and picked the prerecorded speeches through voice commands.

If Mouthpiece creates an objectively alien experience for the two wearer and viewer, The Alien Staff tenders a poignantly human encounter. It raises significant issues for our society while providing a public art performance that empowers and informs its participants and audience, a particularly challenging plot for current political art.
